BIODYNAMICS
Biodynamic agriculture combines ecological and cosmic elements to develop thriving soils, produce, livestock and community. Each farm or garden is viewed as an integrated, living organism that is intrinsically connected with all the elements that make the whole greater than the sum of its parts – not only soils, trees, plants, insects and animals but also, the cosmos, the climate and the community it exists in.
Developed by Rudolf Steiner in the 1920s, biodynamic agriculture aims to replenish and enhance depleted soils that have and continue to be impacted by the industrial and chemicalbased agricultural methods used since the Industrial Revolution. Through his research of the alchemical relations and polarities between the cosmos and the earth, Steiner developed a range of preparations to apply to the landscape based on plant, animal and mineral substances, that are either soil- or atmospheric-based. It is these preparations that when used in conjunction with the lunar cycle and other cosmic transits that create a biodynamic farm or garden that is fully thriving both above and below ground.
Maria Thun further developed this research through her observations relating to the movement of the lunar cycle through the constellations and the direct impact this has on the growth and development of different parts of the plant. This is the basis of the planting information in the annual Alchemilla Lunar Almanac.
